Data Supplements

Supplement – Data Pre Processing

The purpose of this supplement is to make the data processing steps available for others who may wish to examine the patient outcomes of their hospital or region using hospital administrative data, particularly for people with dementia.

Supplement – FAILURE-TO-MAINTAIN-inclusions-and-exclusions

The purpose of this supplement is to make the framework and coding available for others who may wish to examine the patient outcomes of their hospital or region using hospital administrative data. This can also enable replication of data analysis to confirm results. These patient outcomes have been confirmed to be sensitive to nursing care (for a broader range use the Needleman supplement), and the ‘Failure to Maintain’ outcomes have been found to be specifically sensitive to complex older people in hospital, such as people with dementia. Four key complications can be seen as a ‘Failure to Maintain’ complex older people in hospital: urinary tract infection, delirium, pneumonia, and pressure injury. ‘Failure to Maintain’ is the inadequate delivery of essential functional and cognitive care for a complex older person in hospital resulting in a complication, and is recommended as a useful indicator for hospital quality.

Supplement – SAS codes for Nurse Sensitive Outcomes using the Needleman approach

The purpose of this supplement is to make the coding available for others who may wish to examine the patient outcomes of their hospital or region using hospital administrative data. This can also enable replication of data analysis to confirm results. These patient outcomes have been confirmed to be sensitive to nursing care, therefore may be useful outcomes to examine in relation to the quality, quantity or other workforce design components. This supplement includes the SAS codes for ‘Failure to Maintain’ as well as the full Needleman complications.
